Improve your lawn health...
After a series of heatwaves across the UK this summer, your lawn might be looking a little worse for wear. Brown patches, thin grass and hard, dry soil are all common after a hot summer, but don’t worry. Lawns are surprisingly resilient.
As temperatures cool, a little care can help you improve your lawn's health. Here we look at how you can help your grass recover, strengthen its roots and get back to looking lush and healthy.
1. Start with a good tidy
Remove dead grass, leaves and other debris with a lawn rake. This clears the surface and gives healthy grass more room to grow. If the soil has become hard and compacted, aerating it with a garden fork will also help air and water reach the roots.
2. Give tired soil some attention
Healthy grass starts below the surface. After a long, dry spell, topdressing can help improve soil structure and support stronger growth.
Our Turf Dressing Rootzone is a peat-free top-dressing mix designed for patching and improving existing lawns. It helps improve drainage and encourages healthy root growth – exactly what a tired lawn needs after summer.
Apply a thin, even layer across the lawn and gently work it into the surface with the back of a rake.
3. Repair bare patches
If the summer has left you with thin or completely bare areas, now is a good opportunity to repair them. Lawn Seed can be used to renew tired patches and encourage fresh, healthy grass growth.
Keep newly seeded areas watered while they establish, particularly if the dry weather continues.
4. Give your lawn a boost
Grass that has spent summer battling heat and drought will need extra nourishment. A good quality Lawn Feed is designed to promote stronger roots, richer colour and healthier growth, helping your lawn regain its strength. It can also help increase resistance to drought stress and physical damage if hot weather continues.
5. Planning a bigger lawn refresh? Wait for cooler weather
If your lawn is beyond a simple repair, you might be tempted to start again with fresh turf. It’s worth being patient. Avoid laying turf in the middle of summer because the heat means it needs considerably more water and care. Autumn is a much better time to tackle the job.
When the time comes, Lawn Supreme Topsoil provides a nutrient-rich base for new turf, while our locally grown Lawn Turf Rolls can give your garden a fresh start.
With a little TLC now, your lawn can recover from a challenging summer and build stronger roots ready for the seasons ahead.
