Why buy soils and composts in bulk?

As well as offering our soils, composts, barks and mulches in small bags, we’ve always made sure you can buy them in bulk too. There are lots of advantages to buying soils and composts in larger quantities, not least because of the impact it has on the environment.

But if you’re a gardener who has always opted for small bags or offers at the garden centre here are some of the reasons why it makes sense to switch to a bulk bag delivery...

Why buy soils and composts in bulk?

Choosing to buy in bulk offers lots of advantages. But why does it makes sense to switch to a bulk bag delivery?

Cost

Buying in bulk is usually cheaper per tonne than buying smaller bags. Fewer small bags also means lower packaging and transport costs, which can all be reflected in the price.

Convenience

Bulk bags can be ideal for gardeners, even if you don’t have a large plot. As many a seasoned gardener will know a single bag of compost is quickly swallowed up by a couple of pots or baskets, or a small flower bed. It can also save you time and effort, compared to opening and disposing of lots of small bags. And don’t forget that our bulk bags are delivered directly to your home, reducing trips to garden centres and the need for you to haul bags into your car and then the garden.

Environmental benefits

Acting ethically and sustainably is important to us. Our work to recycle green waste avoids it going into landfill, and we feel strongly that everything we do should reduce our impact on the planet – after all we champion green spaces! Bulk bags mean less plastic packaging and reduced waste. The bags we use to transport our soils, composts, mulches, bark and firewood products can be reused in the garden too – use to line raised beds, act as membrane before laying bark or for gathering your green waste up!

Flexibility

Although it’s best to use soil and compost fresh you can keep it in the bag and use over time (if space in your garden allows), making it practical for any ongoing projects you have in the garden.

How Much Topsoil/Compost Do You Need?

Knowing how much to order can make buying in bulk even more cost-effective.

As a general guide:

·         Top dressing lawns: 2–3cm layer

·         Raised beds: fill to at least 20–30cm depth

·         Borders: 5–10cm mulch layer

And remember it’s always better to slightly overestimate and top things up than run short mid-project!

When is the Best Time to Buy in Bulk?

While bulk bags can be used year-round, certain times are ideal:

·         Spring – for planting and soil preparation

·         Autumn – for improving soil ahead of winter

·         Before large landscaping projects – saves time and repeat deliveries

So try a bulk order – remembering that buying in larger bags saves you money in the long term, while being more efficient and environmentally friendly too!
