Why Use Mushroom Compost?

Mushroom compost is a gardeners favourite! This highly organic matter is a by-product from the mushroom growing sector, and can be used effectively to help break up heavy soils and increase aeration in the soil.

It's really useful in vegetable patches and is great to add in if you're growing cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts and kale.

It's also useful as a soil conditioner for borders and to help roses, trees and shrubs. With a chalky base, it's alkaline in nature and makes an excellent mulch to boost the nutrients in your garden soil.

This compost is not suitable for acidic plants as this product is slightly alkaline. Avoid heavy use under rhododendrons, camellias, blueberries or plants which prefer acid conditions

How To Use:

  1. Prepare the area – Remove weeds and large stones. Loosen the surface of the soil slightly if you’re mixing in the compost.
  2. Apply generously – Spread mushroom compost across your beds or borders at a depth of approximately 5 cm (2 inches). For heavy-use areas or vegetable patches, you can go a little deeper (6-8 cm).
  3. Mix or top-dress – For new beds, mix the compost into the top 10–15 cm of soil. For established beds, you can simply top-dress and let the organic matter work its way in.
  4. Leave a small gap around stems/trunks – If applying around shrubs or trees, maintain a space of ~2 cm to allow airflow and avoid contact with bark.

At 5cm depth a 1m3 bulk bag (1000 litres) will cover 20 sq/m and a 0.75m3 (750 litres) bulk bag will cover 15 sq/m. Our bulk bag calculator can provide you with the right number of bulk bags to order based on the quantity of compost, topsoil, bark or mulch that you need.

We'd recommended that you use your products as soon as you can. If that's not possible, cover the bag with a plastic sheet and leave it no longer than a couple of days. Small bags can be left longer and used at a later date.
