Protect plants from winter frost

When your garden needs a boost during the colder months, our peat-free Winter Garden Mulch bulk bags are the perfect solution. It provides natural frost protection for your plants, creating a durable, insulating layer that helps to regulate soil temperature and keep root systems healthy.

Winter soil enhancer

As it naturally breaks down, this nutrient rich mulch also enhances your existing soil, easing heavy clay soils to make them more workable and adding essential volume and vitality to lighter soils.

By stimulating beneficial soil life and improving water retention, our sustainable Winter Mulch supports strong plant growth throughout the entire winter, giving your garden a head start for spring.

How to use Winter Mulch

Using Winter Mulch is a straightforward way to protect and enhance your garden throughout the colder months. For the best results, you should focus on two key steps:

  • First, prepare the area by clearing it of any weeds.
  • Unlike some other mulches, Winter Mulch is designed to be worked directly into the soil.
  • For the best effect, mix it into the top 15-20cm (6-8 inches) of soil, spreading it evenly across the surface. This helps to ease heavy clay soils and add structure to lighter soils.

Winter Mulch is shipped by our approved courier network, and you can choose from small bags or bulk bags depending on the size of your project. Deliveries are made kerbside or to the closest accessible drop-off point the driver can safely reach.

Bulk bags are off-loaded using a tail-lift and a pallet truck, so delivery requires a firm, level surface (tarmac, concrete or paving). Please note that pallet trucks cannot operate over loose ground such as grass, gravel, or steep/sloped driveways. If access to your property is restricted or you’re unsure, please let us know before ordering so we can advise on the best delivery approach.

Once your order leaves our depot you’ll receive tracking details. Large orders may arrive on multiple pallets, depending on volume and weight.

Free delivery on all orders over £100!

Why use winter mulch in your garden

To protect plants from extreme weather – a generous layer of mulch acts like an insulating blanket, shielding roots from freezing temperatures and sudden thaws. This temperature regulation prevents stress and damage to plant roots during winter and provides ongoing protection when temperatures fluctuate in early spring.

To enrich the soil – as the mulch gradually decomposes over winter, it releases valuable nutrients and improves soil structure. Worms and other organisms draw the organic matter deeper into the soil, enhancing aeration and fertility while reducing the need for additional fertilisers.

To conserve soil moisture – mulch helps reduce moisture loss from the soil by limiting evaporation. When compost or organic material is used as mulch, it also absorbs excess water like a sponge, allowing it to filter slowly into the ground. This helps maintain consistent soil moisture, which is vital for strong, resilient plants even in winter.

To support soil life – organic mulch promotes microbial activity as it breaks down, creating a living, healthy soil ecosystem. Increased microbial and root activity lead to stronger, more vigorous plant growth when the growing season returns in spring.

To suppress weeds – a thick layer of winter mulch blocks sunlight from reaching the soil, preventing weed seeds from germinating. By keeping the soil covered, mulch stops unwanted plants from gaining a foothold and keeps your garden tidy through the colder months.

This depends on your goal! If you want to improve the growth of your plants, enjoy more blossoms on your flowers, and provide your garden with additional nutrition, then you should use compost.

However, if you want to reduce weed development, manage run-off and keep soil moist, then it’s mulch that you need.
