The Benefits of Laying Mulch

Made from sustainably sourced organic materials, this organic spring mulch works with your garden’s ecosystem rather than against it.

Lay the composted mulch as the soil starts to warm and watch it help suppress early weeds, feed your plants, and support healthy soil life. Worms, microbes and plant roots all benefit, so your garden gets stronger from below.

Whether you're prepping flowerbeds, vegetable patches or planted borders, Spring Garden Mulch offers both practical advantages and aesthetic appeal. Easy to use, great looking and kind to the environment! just what your garden needs during the spring season.

Why Use Our Organic Spring Mulch?

Steadies the soil: Protects roots from changing spring temperatures.

Enriches the ground: Breaks down to release nutrients into the soil.

Fights weeds early: Blocks light to stop weeds from sprouting.

Retains moisture: Holds on to rainwater and keeps roots hydrated.

How To Use Spring Mulch

  • Clear the bed of weeds and debris.
  • Spread a 5-8cm (2-3 inch) layer across your beds or borders.
  • Leave a small gap around plant stems or trunks to avoid moisture contact.
  • Allow the mulch to break down naturally and refresh as needed.
  • For pathways, rake lightly to maintain the layer when needed.

Benefits of spring mulching

To protect plants from changing weather – in early spring, temperatures can still change dramatically. A layer of mulch acts as an insulating blanket, shielding plant roots from late frosts and sudden warm spells. Adding spring mulch helps reduce stress on plants as they transition into their active growing phase.

To enrich the soil – as mulch breaks down through spring, it releases valuable nutrients that feed plants just as they begin to grow.

To control weeds – adding mulch in spring helps prevent weed seeds from germinating by blocking sunlight and reducing bare soil exposure. This early-season weed suppression keeps your beds tidy and allows your plants to thrive without competition.

To retain moisture – Spring mulching helps maintain steady soil moisture as temperatures rise and plants begin to draw in more water. Organic mulches limit evaporation and absorb rainfall, releasing it slowly into the soil to keep roots hydrated and healthy.

To boost soil life – Organic mulch fosters an active soil ecosystem. As it decomposes, it encourages microbial activity, supporting strong root systems and overall plant vitality throughout the growing season.

FAQs

This depends on your goal! If you want to improve the growth of your plants, enjoy more blossoms on your flowers, and provide your garden with additional nutrition, then you should use compost.

However, if you want to reduce weed development, manage run-off and keep soil moist, then it’s mulch that you need.

By laying down a layer of bark, you can prevent weed development by creating a barrier that blocks any sunlight. However, to maximise the efficiency of bark mulch, it is essential that any existing weeds be removed before laying down your bark. It’s also critical to use a thick coating of bark, ideally 2-3 inches deep, and to inspect and renew the bark layer on a regular basis.

At 5cm depth a 1m3 bulk bag (1000 litres) will cover 20 sq/m and a 0.75m3 (750 litres) bulk bag will cover 15 sq/m. Our bulk bag calculator can provide you with the right number of bulk bags to order based on the quantity of compost, topsoil, bark or mulch that you need.
