Why use mulch in your garden

To stop weeds growing - a thick layer of mulch stops weeds from getting the light and bare soil that they need to germinate, preventing them from getting a foothold in your garden.

To retain moisture in soil - mulching prevents the evaporation of moisture from the soil. Using compost as mulch also helps to reduce ‘run off’ after watering as the compost acts as a sponge, holding water and allowing the excess to filter through. Regulating moisture is important to help build strong healthy plants.

To protect plants - a thick layer of mulch will help protect plants from the extremes of weather during the cold winter and warm summers. As with moisture regulation, temperature regulation will help to build strong plants.

To nourish soil - as mulch breaks down, it releases nutrients, feeding the plants by adding more organic matter to the soil structure. Worms will come to the surface for the organic matter, taking it back into the soil, increasing aeration and leaving a trail of nutrients behind them. Not only will the soil structure be improved, but there will be less need to purchase fertilisers.

To boost microbial activity - compost is an organically activity substance, and as it breaks down, it promotes microbial activity improving the overall soil health and encouraging root growth.

FAQs

This depends on your goal! If you want to improve the growth of your plants, enjoy more blossoms on your flowers, and provide your garden with additional nutrition, then you should use compost.

However, if you want to reduce weed development, manage run-off and keep soil moist, then it’s mulch that you need.

All of our soil conditioners, composts, mulches and topsoil are peat free. Many of them are made from locally sourced recycled plant materials, which are composted under carefully controlled conditions to produce high quality products.

Many of our products have been approved by the Soil Association and are defined by the British Standard for Composted Materials – BSI PAS 100.
